Product Overview and Features

Accuracy of measured load and position are the hallmark of equipment supplied by Lufkin Automation.  Our new Hall Effects Digital Position Transducer provides some of the most important new features in the SAM Well Manager.  This comes about because Lufkin Automation utilizes two digital position transducers that provide a relationship between the speed and loading of the motor and the position of the pumping unit.  Lufkin Automation engineers have derived an algorithm that utilizes the geometry data from a specific model of pumping unit and then calculates the relationship between the motor revolutions and the revolutions of the crank arm and gear box, and thus SAM is able to very accurately plot the exact position of the polish rod throughout the period of the stroke.

Key Operational Features

The primary benefits derived from the Hall Effects Digital Position transducer is the extremely accurate plotting of the pumping unit position, but there are several other extremely important benefits that come about when this type of position measurement is used in the Lufkin Automation SAM Well Manager.  No other rod pump controller on the market provides these features:

  • Motor Speed Control, controlling the pumping unit without the need for a load cell.  Can be the primary control or a secondary redundant control method used when there is a load cell failure.
  •  Belt Slippage detection, watches for changes in motor RPM to detect slippage and alert operator
  • Shuts well down when RPM drops due to motor overload, or due to voltage fluctuations or phase loss.
  • Shuts down in less than one pump stroke for stuck pump.
  • Calculate the upstroke torque and set alarm limits.
  • Calculate the downstroke torque and set alarm limits.
  • Protect the gearbox and pumping unit structure from overload by setting torque limits.
