Product Overview and Features

Lufkin Automation offers the Beam Mounted Load Transducer for use on rod pump wells where the customer is looking for a highly reliable load measurement device.

This method of load measurement has some distinct operational advantages over the polished rod load cell.  It is located on the top of the walking beam and therefore located where it is out of the way of service crews, making servicing operations simpler.  The location on the top of the walking beam provides isolation from the much more operationally hostile environment of the polish rod, therefore avoiding the cable breaks and shock loading associated with placement on the polish rod.  Lufkin Automation has many thousands of successful installations using the Beam Mounted Load Transducer.

The Beam Mounted Load Transducer is frequently sold with an integral Position Inclinometer (see Inclinometer description in this section) installed in the condulet housing at the top of the transducer.  This provides the advantage of providing position measurement and load measurement in the same instrument and thereby simplifies installation, requiring installation of only one cable for both devices.

Most applications of this device are in areas where the operator places a higher premium on the reliability of the end devices rather than on accuracy to derive well analysis.  The Beam Transducer is frequently used in areas where there are difficult pumping and operational conditions due to its high reliability and low maintenance costs.

The Beam Mounted Load Transducer is secured on top of the walking beam of a pumping unit in one of two ways:

  • The more common and preferable way is to weld the device at the centerline of the walking beam forward of the Samson post.  The welding process is very simple and assures that the device is securely attached.

  • Clamping the Beam Mounted Load Transducer to the flange of the walking beam can also be used and provides the convenience of not requiring a welder.

Key Operational Features

The Beam Mounted Load Cell is used for load measurement.  It is a qualitative measurement device which must be calibrated to actual loads when it is installed with the Lufkin Automation MPC or SAM Well Manager controllers.

Location of the device on the top flange of the pumping Unit ensures a trouble free service with little or no maintenance required.

The device (like the polished rod load cell) is a wheatstone bridge circuit utilizing strain gauge technology.

It is installed by either welding or clamping the device the the walking beam of a pumping unit.
